Authentication ...

A protocol that is used to ask a user for a username and password. Nici does not support websites that require authentication. For more information see RFC2617.

Auto Pilot ...

A feature of Nici which automatically finds and downloads pictures. The Auto-Pilot uses directory pages to locate links to follow to find pictures. For more information see Automated Movie, Picture and Image Downloading or the example page: tgp downloader.

Automated Internet Bot ...

Software that accesses the internet in an automated fashion. Can describe Nici. For more information see Automated Internet Bot.

Automatic download ...

Process a list of web page addresses, downloading the content for later viewing. For more information see Automated Movie, Picture and Image Downloading.

Directory pages ...

Web pages that are regularly updated with links to other pages. For more information see Directory Pages and Lists of Links or the example pages: picture finder or tgp downloader.

Crawler ...

Software that methodically accesses webpages by locating links in webpages and following them. See the FAQ page: Picture Crawler .

Crawl downloading ...

A download strategy which systematically follows all links on a web page. For more information see the example page tgp crawler, or the FAQ page using crawl downloading

Download Line ...

A feature of Nici to which you can add web page addresses for later downloading. Nici automatically works down the line downloading between 2 and 10 pages simultaneously. For more information see Download Line.

Download Strategy ...

A method of selecting which parts of a web page to download.

HTTP protocol ...

For more information see Birds Eye View of HTTP.

HTTP user agent ...

Software that uses the HTTP protocol when accessing the internet. Examples of HTTP user agent software are your web browser (for example Internet Explorer), search engine spiders and picture downloaders (fro example Nici).

Image grabber ...

Image ripper ...

Image saver ...

Installer ...

Software, usually named "ProgramSetup.exe", that contains all the files a software program requires, and places those files in the correct locations on a users computer. The installer software also includes a method to uninstall the software if the user wishes to remove it from their computer. For more information see How to Download and Install Nici.

JPEG ...

A commonly used format for web photos. For more information see the article: web pics

Keycode ...

Link-lists ...

See directory pages.

License key ...

A string of letters and numbers that when entered into software can unlock features not available in the trial version. For more information see Purchase FAQ.

Movie downloader ...

Software that downloads and saves movies and video files from web sites. In addition to being a picture downloader, Nici is also a movie downloader.

Movie grabber ...

NIC Files ...

Picture files saved by Nici in obscure mode. For more information see the FAQ entry: Saving Jpegs

Obscure Mode ...

A feature of Nici that slightly alters the way that pictures are saved to your hard drive, so that programs like Windows Explorer will not be able to display them. For more information see Protect your family.

Pic (plural pix) ...

Picture downloader ...

Software that downloads and saves pictures from web sites. Similar to web browser software, but instead of just displaying a web page's pictures, the pictures are saved to your computer. A picture downloader will also work automatically, processing a list of web page addresses, downloading all the pictures from the pages. Picture Morph ...

A feature of Nici in which one picture is gradually changed into a second picture.

Picture Rating ...

Picture ripper ...

Picture searcher ...

Software that can find pictures related to a specific topic. For more information, see the faq entry: Searching for pictures.

Picture Series ...

A related set of pictures or photos on the web. For more information, see Picture series.

Picture Viewer ...

A feature of Nici through which you can view the pictures that have been downloaded. For more information see Picture Viewing.

Slideshow ...

A feature of Nici which automatically displays a number of pictures, one after the other. For more information see Running a slideshow

Spider ...

Software that methodically accesses webpages by locating links in webpages and following them. For more information, see Picture spider.

Spyware ...

Software that "phones home". Without informing the user, spyware connects to the internet and provides information about the user of the software or the state of the program. Nici contains no spyware.

Standard internet connection ...

The network connection that your computer uses by default to access the internet. This can be a dial up connection, or a permanent network connection. It is the connection that your web browser and email program uses to access the internet.

TGP ...

Short for Thumbnail Gallery Post (or pages). A popular method of placing pictures and photos on the web. For more information see the FAQ tgp pics

TGP downloader ...

See picture downloader or the example page: tgp downloader.

Theme ...

The look and feel (colors and button images etc) of a software program. Nici comes with 12 different themes that you can select from.

Thumbnail gallery ...

A method of placing pictures on the web. See the FAQ for a description of the types of thumbnail galleries, or the example page: thumbnail gallery grabber.

Thumbnail post ...

See directory pages. A website that lists thumbnail gallery picture pages. See Thumbnail Post for more information.

Trial version ...

A version of a software program that is limited in some way. The trial version gives you the opportunity to evaluate the software to see if you wish to purchase it. After purchasing, a keycode can be entered into the trial version which will unlock it and remove all limitations. Usenet picture downloader ...

Software that uses the NNTP protocol to access usenet newsgroups to find and download pictures. Nici is not a Usenet picture downloader. See see Google or open directory project for a list of Usenet picture downloader software clients.

Watermark ...

A mark that placed on a picture such that the original picture is still visible underneath the marking.

Web photo ...

See web picture.

Web picture ...

Graphic files (photos, diagrams, images etc) that are uploaded to the web by webpage authors, and are linked to from web pages. Web-browser software will download and display these pictures. Picture downloader software will download, display and save these pictures to your hard drive. For more information see How to save web pictures.

Web-browser ...

Software, like Internet Explorer and Netscape, that accesses the internet using the HTTP protocol and displays the downloaded content. For more information see Pictures and Pages.
