Problem: You entered the address of a page that you wanted to download the pictures from (for example a page linking to many free wallpaper files) , and Nici didn't download any pictures, or downloaded pictures you didn't want (not the wallpapers).
The reason this happens is that by default, Nici will not spend much time speculatively downloading links if it is not fairly sure what the page is. This is beneficial in situations where you quickly add 50-100-200 pages to the download line and don't want Nici wasting too much time downloading junk pages.
For more information on how to do this, please see:
The solution to this problem is to use Crawl downloading, which systematically follows all links looking for pictures and/or movies.
If a page has already been downloaded, you can switch to crawl downloading by double clicking on the page to open the "Download Control" window, and selecting "Crawl".
To crawl a new address, click on the "File" menu, then click on "New Page...". This is illustrated in the screenshot below:
For more information on how to set the crawl settings, please see the online help page at:
Some pages are designed to be unfriendly to search engine crawlers and crawlers like Nici. They use javascript and other tricks to hide links from crawlers. Fortunately these pages are not in the majority, mainly because webmasters are very interested in having their sites in the search engines.
In the current version of Nici, if the page uses Javascript/VBScript, Nici may not be able to download from it.
Version 3 of Nici is due out in mid 2005 and will be a free upgrade for all users.
We are looking to add more options to the settings and provide a solution to pages that use javascript. Some of the planned features are regex filters, size filters, and macro generation of image urls. If you have any suggestions for this, please email us at [email protected]
