A picture ripper means much the same thing and it could be said that: "A picture ripper is a piece of software that reads webpages and extracts picture data and stores it in a picture format files.

In plain english, a picture ripper is software that saves pictures from webpages (like this one) to your computer.

Ripping out Pictures

Ripper is a great way to describe software like Nici.

Imagine you have a printout of this page. You could then use the perforation marks below, and rip each picture out. You would be left with a page with nine "holes" in it, and a pile of ripped out pictures.

That is effectively what Nici does to the electronic version of this page (except Nici does not get the smaller thumbnail pictures, but instead rips the larger pictures behind each thumbnail.)
