We dislike being infected with spyware just as much as you do.
Spyware is bad for business ... understandably, after being infected with spyware, people are less likely to download and try new software. A few rotten apples are spoiling the barrel.
Typically spyware is "bundled" with other software. For example you have heard about a free filesharing program, you download and install it ... and it then installs 3 other programs without you knowing.
No one in their right mind would choose to install a spyware program ... who wants to see more ads when they browse the web, or have their start page continually hijacked.
The companies who create the spyware know this, so they offer authors of other software money for every copy of their spyware that gets installed. A typical figure is 5 cents per copy.
Not all freeware contains spyware, and not all spyware is bundled with freeware.
However, freeware authors are attractive targets for the spyware companies. Popular freeware title have high download counts, which the spyware companies like, and the 5 cents per copy can add for the author.
The business model for these software authors is to have their software downloaded (and installed) as many times as possible.
On the other hand, most software does not contain or bundle spyware. Instead the business model is to offer a free trial (or a "lite/personal" version) and to make the software so useful, that the user is willing to pay for unlimited use of the software.
In the second model, the incentive is to make the software as easy to use as possible to make the user's experience with the software pleasant. The bottom line is that to make money ... we need to make really good software.
We strongly believe that the spyware model is bad business. Sooner or later the word will get out that their software bundles spyware and people will stop downloading it. Secondly, every person who has been infected with spyware is less likely to download and try new software. They are cutting their own throats, but unfortunately, they are also hurting companies that do not bundle spyware, instead relying on their software being good enough that people who try it want to buy it.
Aside from being bad business, bundling spyware is deceitful and disrespectful to users.
Get a spyware scanner/remover. We recommend Ad-Aware by Lavasoft. They have a free non-commercial version, or the "plus" version for around $25.00.
Take the time to download a copy of Ad-Aware and give your computer a scan. If you have any spyware, it is time to get rid of it!
