Popularity

Our popularity rating was determined from publicly available data from alexa and overture. Alexa estimates how many visitors a website receives (by tracking information from a toolbar that some web users install). Overture tracks how many searches take place through their system for certain phrases. We recorded how many searches occurred for each tgp's hostname.

In the above graphic the alexa ranking is 664 (the lower the better) and the overture searches per month is 972015 (the higher the better).

Rating Popularity

To determine our popularity rating we gave equal points to both the alexa data and overture data. The tgps were then sorted in order and assigned marks between A+ and C-. The theory behind this rating is that good quality tgps become more popular because visitors return (or search for them) if they have a good experience). In effect, this is the "People's choice" rating.

Notes

The overture data was reported as searches in the month of Nov2004. This number should not be interpreted as the absolute total number of searches, as it does not include data from some of the larger search engines.

In some cases, overture returned 0 results. This is probably caused by their system assigning the searches to another phrase. In these cases we gave the tgps the average.
